Why didn't Herod follow the star?

The Magi told Herod all about it, and probably even said "That star, over there. The one hanging over Bethlehem, above their house." Why would Herod need the Magi to tell him where the kid was? In the story, they already told him. Why wouldn't Herod just send his troops there to kill all kids that are too small for the amusement park rides?

Why didn't Herod follow the star?
Because even though Herod was smart enough to welcome the Magi men and wish them peace on their journey, he wasn't smart enough to send a spy to follow them... either that, or the story is not based on reality.
Reply:Herod was not wise as the wise man. He couldn't know prediction of where the star was without the wise man telling him.

Your story is mess up.
Reply:That's exactly what he did... But he wanted the magi to found out where he was first.
Reply:The Magi were astrologers and knew how to read the stars. They studied the stars their whole lives, I doubt Herod had time to do the same. Plus, scripture says he talked to the Magi privately. Perhaps he didn't want the majority to know he was planning to kill the new king therefore making him even more disliked than he already was since he wasn't the rightful heir of the throne of David. That was his original plan, but since he was thwarted, his jealousy took over and he DID kill all the kids in Bethlehem (although he stopped at about age two so most of the kids too small for amusement park rides were spared). But since he had several of his own kids killed, this was probably no big for him.
Reply:It was a plot device to further the myth.

Reply:He wasn't one of the stars on the belt of Orion. The birth story is an astro-theological allegory, not a history lesson.
Reply:Proper evil overlords sit on their throne throughout the whole story, pointing a lot and threatening to make people pay for their insolence.
Reply:Herod DID send all his troops.
Reply:Because God knew of Herod's ill intent, he did not allow certain ones to see this star.... a true miracle, it appeared to those whom he "allowed" to see it.
Reply:The three astrologers were sent by Satan to kill the child. God intervened before the king could come anyways.
Reply:He wanted to know exactly what child it was so it would not ruin his reign as king
Reply:Because it was in the plot.
Reply:cz the star they are talking abt was actually a quasar 5 billion light years away and is a 2.4 million miles wide burning plasma fusion reaction ..... and is radioactively decaying ...... and .... cz there was no infrared hubble telescope in the skies 2000 years ago
Reply:The fact that the magi followed the star doesn't mean it was blinking like a beacon. More like astrology. Signs and portents.
