What about the star?

The star over Bethlehem is a major part of the Christmas story, and repeated every Christmas time in sermons, in dioramas, on greeting cards, etc.

The star was only mentioned in a single gospel, written years after the event. Also, neither Chinese nor Arabic astronomers (who have a first class reputation for watching the heavens at this time) reported seeing anything at all. There is no evidence of a super-nova in 6-7BC when Christ was supposedly born.

Is there any evidence beyond a single gospel that a star did shine over Bethlehem? (I don't want an argument about stars shining 'over things' please - it is not the focus of this question).

What about the star?
The three magi that visited baby Jesus at the time of his birth came from persia. The persians in that time where zoastrians. The zoastrians believed that a Messiah would be born. There beliefs told them that when the Messiah would be born, there would be a constilation in the sky. The major player in the constilation was actually a planet. The planet jupiter.

Please do forgive me, I watched a documentary that was specifically about the three magi. The scholars did studies that showed there was a consilation in the skys in the year Jesus Christ was born. The documentary also stated that different faiths in different cultures used the stars in the skys telling them when kings would be born. I dont remember the name of the documentary.
Reply:Of course there is no 'evidence'. What evidence could there be?
Reply:There's a lot of things people fail to notice.

The only reason the Magi were even looking for a sign was because Daniel the Prophet had prophesied just such an event several hundred years before, while the Jews were in Babylonian captivity ... and he included the necessary time frame in his prophecy.

This, coupled with several other key prophecies from the old testament writings, would be all that anyone who was truly wise, would need to know.

As for a possible origin of the "star" one needs only search the old testament for a number of other similar appearances by a rather unusual, supernatural "craft" which was revealed as very bright, like polished bronze, accompanied by angels, and carrying the very throne of God.

See Ezekiel 1:1 for much more on this.
Reply:God was playing Celestial Y!A and somebody liked his question that night.
Reply:It couldve appeared as such only to those who believed or the astronomer's records were lost
Reply:maybe it was some kind of venus transit kind of thing, where stars were alligned in a certain way and the scholars (wise men) knew of the prophecies and what to make of it.
Reply:Nope. No evidence, because it never happened.
Reply:In today's world too many are city folks. I am too. Once in a while one of the planets is bright enough to so to say stay overhead all the time when out for a walk.

Such can not be used to locate any object or as guidance. It simply is not possible.

Thus for the star mentioned in the Bible, the star had to be a supernatural phenomenon.

A lot of people are going to thumb me, but reading the account, it is evident that it was of demonic origin since it lead the three persons to Herod who wanted to kill the child and only then to the baby Jesus at that time ca. 2 years old living in a house with his parents.

(Jesus born ca 2BC October 1 +- 15 days)
Reply:I don't recall when it was that I saw this subject on the star of Bethlehem...but I do remember seeing this on the discovery channel and they said that it was recorded and it did take place at the apparent time of Christ's birth...maybe you can check it out on discovery channel.com
Reply:No true evidence. However there is speculation that is was either the alignment of three planets or a comet passing close by the earth. Both of which events reportedly occured during the time in question.

Don't look for the evidence in the winter months. If the stories Were true, it would have been during the Spring. Which is the time the shepards would have been out tending their flocks. The Winter time celebration was the Christian way of converting the "Pagans" to their religion by using one of their holidays (the rebirth of the Sun God at Winter Solstice).
